Meet Xthula: The Shifting Shadow of Magog City

Every tyrant commands a weapon to strike down dissent before it can take root. For the ruthless Regent Tiberius, that weapon is Xthula.

Every tyrant commands a weapon to strike down dissent before it can take root. For the ruthless Regent Tiberius, that weapon is Xthula.

As the personal bodyguard and premier assassin to the throne, she moves through the high-class nobility of Magog City like an extension of Tiberius’s own bottomless malice. Yet, even in an industrial kingdom crawling with monstrous elite, bloodthirsty Zumari street enforcers, and ectoplasmic future-seeing Council grubs, Xthula remains the narrative’s most compelling, tight-lipped paradox. She is a quiet tempest waiting to break the very balance she was hired to protect

The Psychology of the Porcelain Mask

The absolute core of Xthula’s striking visual design—gorgeously rendered by concept artist Paul Gerrard—is her faceplate. She never removes it. In a court where Tiberius traded his humanity for a Faustian grasp at immortality, Xthula’s mask serves a deeply strategic psychological purpose.

By hiding her expressions, she completely denies her targets any semblance of human connection or mercy. The court whispers are endless: some claim she is a disfigured victim of the regime, while others whisper she is an autonomous extension of the dark magic binding the kingdom. But by entirely stripping away her face, she becomes an idea rather than a person—the unyielding personification of Tiberius’s violent authority.

Weaponizing the Architecture: The Spy in Plain Sight

Most elite guards are content simply standing at attention outside gilded doors, but Xthula treats her environment as a tactical grid. Over years of silent service, she has quietly mapped the hidden anatomical layout of the palace.

She knows every rotting foundation beam, every acoustic blind spot in the grand halls, and every forgotten subterranean escape route winding beneath the city. This transforms her from a simple physical barrier into a dangerous information broker. While the egotistical Tiberius focuses on tracking external rebel forces and wrestling with his supernatural contracts, his most lethal asset is silently gathering the exact blueprints required to bring his fortress crashing down from the inside.

The Jocosta Wildcard: Affection or Ultimate Gambit?

The most volatile layer of Xthula’s profile is her unexplained, fiercely protective stance toward Princess Jocosta. In a system built purely on fear, extortion, and absolute compliance, genuine vulnerability is a death sentence.

This protective shadow introduces a massive question mark into the overarching story:

    • The Strategic Pawn Theory: Is Xthula keeping Jocosta alive simply because the princess is a vital piece of leverage needed to completely checkmate Tiberius when the perfect political window opens?
    • The Hidden Bloodline Connection: Is there a deeper, ancestral bond or shared tragedy linking the assassin to the royal daughter?
    • The Act of Defiance: Is protecting the princess the only sovereign, moral choice Xthula has left in a life otherwise completely consumed by violence?

As the gears of war grind closer to a breaking point, this secret agenda will inevitably force her hand. When her mask finally slips and her true target is exposed, the fallout will redefine the future of Magog City forever.

  • More Than Muscle: The Gentle Heart of Monsterwood’s Oni Guardian

More Than Muscle: The Gentle Heart of Monsterwood’s Oni Guardian

First impressions can be deceiving, especially in the world of Monsterwood. When you see Scrag, a giant of the red Oni people, towering over his companions, the assumptions come easily: brute, warrior, monster. His heritage is one of brutality, a culture where strength is paramount. But to judge Scrag by his size or his species is to miss the truth of him entirely.

Beneath the formidable exterior lies the soul of a protector who would prefer a world of peace to one of endless battle. Scrag’s strength is not a weapon he wields with relish, but a tool he uses in reluctant service to a cause he believes in. He is a walking paradox—a gentle giant whose loyalty is far more powerful than his fists.

This internal conflict is at the core of his character. What happens when a being who values peace is constantly thrust into violence? How does he reconcile his gentle nature with the lethal instincts required to survive the savage jungles of Monsterwood? Scrag’s story is not just one of physical strength, but of profound inner fortitude. He is a guardian in every sense of the word, protecting his friends not just with his body, but with his heart.

  • A Kingdom Divided: Jocosta’s Fight for Justice Across the Borders of Monsterwood

A Kingdom Divided: Jocosta’s Fight for Justice Across the Borders of Monsterwood

In a land fractured by prejudice and fear, where the Maheekanu people live in wary separation from the often-persecuted Mahru, what does justice truly mean? For Princess Jocosta, this is not an abstract question but a living, breathing challenge that lies at the very heart of her dangerous journey into Monsterwood and her claim to the throne.

Having been awakened to the harsh realities her uncle, Tiberius, sought to conceal, Jocosta sees beyond the simplistic narratives of “us versus them.” She witnesses firsthand the suffering inflicted by systemic cruelty and the devastating impact of a society built on division. Her growing understanding doesn’t allow her to simply pick a side in the traditional sense; instead, a deeper, more inclusive sense of justice begins to burn within her.

Jocosta’s quest becomes intrinsically linked to healing these divides. She grapples with complex moral dilemmas: how to unite a kingdom that has only known mistrust, how to offer redemption where there has been only pain, and how to protect all those in need, regardless of whether they walk on two legs or possess monstrous forms. Her empathy extends beyond her own kind, recognizing the shared desire for freedom and dignity that binds all living beings in Magog.

Her fight is not just against a tyrannical regent, but against the very prejudices that allow such tyranny to thrive. Can one young woman, even one with royal blood and a warrior’s spirit, bridge the chasm of hate and fear? Jocosta’s journey suggests that true leadership lies in the courage to champion justice for all, forging a new path towards a more united future.

Explore the complex world Jocosta is fighting to change.

Delve deeper into her motivations and the moral battles she faces on her character page:

  • More Than a Princess: The Unbreakable Spirit Forging Jocosta into Monsterwood’s Future Queen

More Than a Princess: The Unbreakable Spirit Forging Jocosta into Monsterwood’s Future Queen

The title of “Princess” often conjures images of delicate gowns and demure smiles. But in the darkening world of Monsterwood, such titles are mere starting points. True leaders, the kind that inspire fierce loyalty and spark revolutions, are forged in the fires of adversity. Princess Jocosta is rapidly proving to be one such leader.

Beneath the surface of a royal upbringing, Jocosta harbors an indomitable spirit—a potent combination of sharp intellect, deep empathy, and a resilience that can weather any storm. She’s not just a figurehead; she’s a woman who feels the pain of her people, both Maheekanu and Mahru, and possesses the strategic mind to fight for their future. This isn’t a tale of a damsel in distress, but of a leader stepping into her power.

Her journey from a sheltered royal to a pivotal figure in the rebellion against tyranny is marked by a profound internal transformation. Jocosta learns to adapt, to fight, to lead, all while retaining the core of her compassionate nature. She understands that true strength isn’t about brute force alone, but about inspiring hope, making difficult choices with a clear moral compass, and a willingness to stand for those who cannot stand for themselves. Her ability to blend her innate femininity with the fierce resolve of a warrior makes her a uniquely compelling figure in the fight for Magog’s soul.

Jocosta’s path is one of constant growth, as she grapples with the weight of her lineage and the desperate need for change. She is a testament to the idea that true royalty is defined by courage and conviction, not just by bloodline.

Witness the evolution of a queen.

  • The Gilded Cage: Why Princess Jocosta Risked It All for the Truth of Monsterwood

The Gilded Cage: Why Princess Jocosta Risked It All for the Truth of Monsterwood

Princess Jocosta. Heir to the throne of Magog, a name whispered with reverence within the towering city walls. To many, her life was one of enviable luxury, a tapestry woven with the finest silks and shielded from any discomfort. Raised under the watchful eye of her uncle, the Regent Tiberius, following the tragic loss of her parents, Jocosta’s world was meant to be one of serene order and blissful ignorance. But even the most carefully constructed cages have bars that eventually feel cold to the touch.

Tiberius painted a picture of a realm where true danger only lurked beyond the city’s embrace, deep within the menacing shadows of Monsterwood – the place where her parents met their untimely end. He meticulously crafted her understanding of the world, ensuring she remained unaware of the simmering unrest amongst the Maheekanu people and the brutal oppression faced by the Mahru. Yet, whispers have a way of seeping through even the thickest stone walls, and a royal heart yearns for truth, no matter how sheltered.

What happens when the heir to a kingdom realizes her entire life might be a carefully orchestrated lie? For Jocosta, the dawning awareness of the suffering kept hidden from her, coupled with the gnawing questions surrounding her parents’ fate, became an unbearable weight. The “safety” of the palace began to feel like a prison, its luxury a silken blindfold. Driven by an insatiable need for answers and a burgeoning sense of justice, Jocosta made a choice that would change everything: to defy her regent, abandon her gilded cage, and venture into the dreaded Monsterwood.

Her quest is not just for personal truth, but for the soul of her kingdom. What secrets lie buried in the heart of Monsterwood? And can a princess, raised in isolation, survive it’s perils long enough to uncover them?

Dive Deeper into Monsterwood: Creator Jason Rosen Shares Insights with The Beat

The Monsterwood Omnibus, collecting Jason Rosen’s dark fantasy coming-of-age saga, is now available! Featuring the incredible art of Steve Ellis, Chris Campana, and Figue, co-created by Nick Efstathiou, this epic tale invites readers into a world of magic, monsters, and profound questions.

Recently, The Beat sat down with creator Jason Rosen for an in-depth interview about the inspiration and creation of Monsterwood. We’re giving you a sneak peek at some of the fascinating insights he revealed – but for the full story, you’ll want to read the complete interview on Comics Beat!

What inspired the Monsterwood graphic novel?

In the interview, Jason Rosen reveals a deeply personal inspiration for the central character, Jovis. He shares how the birth of his firstborn son sparked universal questions about identity and purpose. This profound experience became the impetus for Jovis’s own journey, exploring how one finds meaning and contributes to a better society in a vast, complex world.

Who created the unique look and atmosphere of Monsterwood?

Rosen discusses the collaborative magic behind Monsterwood’s distinctive aesthetic. He explains how he, co-writer Nick Efstathiou, and artists Steve Ellis and Chris Campana, all drawing from their shared love for ’70s and ’80s fantasy (which Rosen calls the “Golden Age”), crafted the world. As a concept designer and sculptor himself, Rosen took an active role in creating a cohesive, “lived-in” feel for the world of Magog, ensuring a blend of mystery, beauty, and haunting atmosphere.

What complex themes does the Monsterwood Omnibus explore?

Rosen highlights that the Monsterwood universe is a rich playground for philosophical questions and societal issues. Beyond the monsters and magic, readers will find explorations of heroism, unity, and the idea that true heroism might involve healing a nation, not just vanquishing evil. He describes it as a “love letter” to the influences of his childhood, aiming to entertain and inspire readers in a similar way.

What is the Monsterwood Omnibus about for new readers?

For those new to the saga, Jason Rosen provided a compelling pitch to The Beat:

The Monsterwood Omnibus: All Become One is a dark fantasy coming-of-age story centered on Princess Jocasta and teen troublemaker Jovis. Following the murder of Magog’s king and queen, supposedly by the monstrous denizens of the Monsterwood, young Jocasta and Jovis find themselves on a perilous journey. They navigate dangerous forests and uncover truths about their kingdom and themselves, realizing the dangers in both Monsterwood and Magog are far greater – and different – than they ever imagined.

    Perfect for fans of:

    • ’70s and ’80s fantasy aesthetics
    • Tabletop/RPG games like Dungeons & Dragons
    • Rich cinematic worlds such as The Lord of the Rings and The Dark Crystal

    The Jungle of Monsterwood

An ancient city in a valley of the Molakallah mountains, is now one of the most unexplored regions known as Monsterwood. Long before that catastrophic day, it was a different story. Back then, Mani Depu as it was known, was a sacred city in an absolutely intact, undisturbed, pristine state, buried in a rainforest so remote and untouched that the beings who lived there had never seen Maheekanu people before their arrival a few hundred years ago.

The Mahru welcomed the Maheekanu as their own people, taught them the ways of the land and showed them how it could provide them nourishment, both physical and spiritual, if they only understood the complex web of life that thrived there.

For centuries, Mahru and Maheekanu lived peacefully in balance with the natural world. A Sacred shrine to the Maheekanu’s Goddess was built in the heart of Mani Depu with the Mahru’s help and blessing.

A true balance of Mahru and Maheekanu was achieved, but not all were seeking balance.

Tiberius blamed the murders on the Mahru, now referred to as “monsters”, and he forbade travel to Mani Depu. Despite the shrine’s beauty, power, and mystery, Tiberius declared, it was far too dangerous to enter. However, there was no penalty for disobeying this edict, for any who entered the forbidden zone, known now as Monsterwood, vanished into the jungle’s depths.
